The History of the Gentlemen's Club

A gentlemen's club is a private spot where men can go to get away and have fun. While some people see them only as glorified strip clubs, the exclusivity of such places makes them all the more enticing. However, the history and background of how these establishments came about may be even more interesting.

These clubs were originally established in the 18th Century by a group of wealthy British men in London, England. However, they did not become particularly popular until the 19th and 20th Centuries. In fact, it was the upper-middle class population who frequented these places at that time. During this time period, London boasted nearly 400 gentlemen's clubs.

The explosion of popularity may have been due to the Reform Acts established during the early 1800s. At this time, many men were finally given the opportunity to vote. This prompted many of them to feel that their status and worth had been increased, and they deemed themselves worthy to join these exclusive establishments. Although the existing clubs were wary of the influx of new members, this didn't stop people from being interested. Even though there was a good deal of discrimination, strict membership rules, and extremely long waiting lists, their interest never waned. Eventually they began creating their own clubs.

Pretty soon, each club began to formulate its own particular character. For example, one establishment may have been geared toward sports interests, while another might cater to those interested in politics. There were even clubs available for those who graduated from the same university, or were members of the same military branch. It soon became extremely difficult for someone not to be able to find a suitable gentlemen's club.

Contrary to popular belief, stripteases weren't the only thing these clubs provided. In some cases, this isn't even what some men were interested in. Some saw it as a way for them to unwind and relax, like a home away from home. They could play games, hang out with friends, and even get a bite to eat. For many men, it was a great way to escape relationship problems, even if it was just for a little while. Some establishments even allowed members to stay overnight.

Some men spent a great deal of their lives in these clubs. In fact, it wasn't uncommon for a young man just out of college to stay at the institution for a couple of years until he was able to afford his own place. As you can see, the idea of the gentlemen's club is nothing new. It's a form of recreation that began many years ago.
